Mistakes when customizing t-shirts (and how to avoid them)
Are you planning to have custom t-shirts or apparel made for your brand or event? Avoid these common mistakes that can affect the final result, your budget, or even your brand's image.
At BrandLab, we've worked on hundreds of projects and we know exactly what details can make (or break) a production. Here are the top mistakes when customizing clothing... and how to avoid them.
1. Submit low-quality designs
One of the most common mistakes is sending a design in JPG format, blurry, or with a background. For DTF printing or embroidery, it's essential to send high-resolution files with a transparent background (ideally in PNG or vector).
Tip: If you don't have the file ready, BrandLab will vectorize it for you at no additional cost.
2. Not considering the size and location of the design
It seems obvious, but often it's not specified whether the design should be on the chest, back, or sleeve, or whether it should be large or discreet. This can completely change the visual impact of the garment.
Solution: Always ask for a mockup beforehand or consult with the team to confirm the ideal size.
3. Choosing the wrong garment for the design
Some fabrics don't work well for DTF printing or embroidery. For example, fabrics that are too thin can wrinkle under heat, and some very stretchy fabrics aren't ideal for embroidery.
Tip: Choose 100% cotton garments for DTF or firmer fabrics for embroidery.
4. Not checking spelling or final colors
Ordering T-shirts with misspelled phrases or in colors that don't match the background is more common than you might think. Once printed or embroidered, it can't be corrected.
Tips: Reread the texts, confirm the colors on screen, and ask for a sample if you have any questions.
5. Relying on suppliers without real support
Many services just print what you send them, without any assistance or review. This leads to errors that can't be resolved later.
At BrandLab, we advise you: we review your files, recommend materials and techniques, and produce to a premium standard starting at just 6 units.
